Sport at Westbrook Lane Primary School

Sport is an important part of the curriculum at Westbrook Lane. Each class has two sessions of P.E. each week except Year 4, which has one lesson in school and one session of swimming lessons at Aireborough Leisure Centre

In addition to the lessons taught by the class teacher or P.E leader, we regularly have specialist coaches who come into school to teach a course of lessons such as tag rugby, basketball, multi skills, cricket, dodgeball and athletics. At the end of the course, the children usually participate in a tournament with children from other local schools.

Each summer, we hold a sports day where children are in mixed teams from across their key stage. Our ethos is to help children develop the ability to support and encourage other people. Working in mixed age and mixed ability teams enables children to apply these qualities with confidence in a secure environment. We have been delighted year in and year out with the way children have helped those who may have been less confident than themselves and supported others in their team.

We are members of the Airedale and Wharfedale Sports Association and the Leeds School Sports Association; we also have strong links with the Leeds North West Schools Partnership and many local community clubs to which we direct interested or talented pupils.

In addition to the regular P.E lessons, there are opportunities for children to engage in the following sports and physical activities during and after school:

  • Years 3 and 4 boys' football
  • Years 5 & 6 boys' football
  • Girls' football for years 3, 4, 5, and 6
  • Running for all children year 3 upwards.
  • Dodgeball (KS1 & 2)
  • KS2 Gymnastics

Football

Our boys' and girls' football teams take part in Leeds Football Association school cup competitions cups. We regularly play inter-school matches and tournaments for both boys and girls including the Moran Cup, Jim Child's Trophy, The Armitage Cup and the St. Bart's Cup.

Cross Country

We participate in the Leeds Schools Athletics Association Cross County league and enter teams in the under 11 boys and under 11 girls races held on Saturdays throughout the season. We have had children represent the school at the West Yorkshire Games for cross country in 2018 and 2019.

Gymnastics

For the last eleven years, we have entered the Key Steps Gymnastics Competition with notable success, having won the Leeds final on several occasions, thus representing Leeds at the West Yorkshire School Games where we have been Bronze, Silver and Gold Medal Winners. Teams are chosen from across Key stage 2 from those children attending after school provision.

Physical Education - School Sports Premium

Since September 2013, all schools have been allocated a Sports Premium in their budget to promote Physical Education (PE), School Sport (SS) and Healthy Active Lifestyles (HAL).

At Westbrook, we already have a wide range of activities to engage children, both during and after school. We take part in a variety of inter and intra-school sports competitions, festivals and tournaments. Children compete in many local events and competitions as well as Leeds wide initiatives. Through opportunities such as these, children have progressed to represent Leeds in the West Yorkshire Games. We audit our provision and its impact throughout the year and new initiatives are added in order to meet our aims. These are:

  • to develop competence to excel in a broad range of activities
  • to ensure pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • to engage in competitive sports and activities
  • to lead healthy, active lives
  • to engage in opportunities to embed values such as fairness and respect
